Capacity building supports help you develop skills for everyday life and work towards your goals. Your plan determines which supports you can buy. A goal or diagnosis alone does not confirm funding.
What could support look like?
- Daily living: assessments, training or therapy to build practical skills, such as communication or everyday routines.
- Community and work: support to develop social skills, take part in activities or build employment skills.
- Using your plan: funded support coordination or plan management, where included in your plan.
These are examples, not a package everyone receives. Agree useful goals and ways to review progress with your practitioner. Progress differs between people; support does not guarantee employment, recovery or reduced future assistance.
Check the funding before you book
The NDIA describes capacity building categories as stated supports. You cannot move funding between those categories, and must buy the NDIS supports described in your plan. Check any stated item, quote requirement, funding period and available amount.
If the wording is unclear, ask your NDIS contact to explain it before committing to a service. A price-calculator result estimates costs; it does not decide eligibility or approve a claim.

Choose a suitable provider
NDIA-managed funding requires registered providers. Self-managed and plan-managed funding usually allow more choice, but some supports still require registration, including specialist behaviour support and plan management. Check the rules for your specific support.
- Ask about the practitioner’s qualifications, approach and current capacity.
- Agree delivery, frequency, rates and any report-writing, travel or other permitted charges before starting.
- Decide how progress will be reviewed and how you can change or end the arrangement.
Your questions, answered
Can I move unused capacity building funding to another category?
No. Follow the stated support descriptions and category allocations in your plan. Ask your NDIS contact about any changes you need.
Does capacity building replace everyday personal care?
Skill-building and help with daily tasks have different purposes. Check which support is described and funded in your plan rather than choosing a category from the provider’s job title.
