NDIS telehealth: choosing online support that suits you

Telehealth may let you meet a practitioner without travelling to an appointment. The support still needs to suit your goals, disability-related needs and funding arrangements.

Choose the right way to meet

Discuss what you want to work on and whether video, phone, in-person appointments or a combination will be suitable. Some assessments and practical tasks need someone there with you.

For a child, ask the practitioner how the session will work, who needs to be present and what help the family may need. Being at home does not make every online session suitable.

Check the support and funding

Online delivery does not create an entitlement to funding. Eligible therapy must meet the NDIS funding criteria and be supported by evidence of benefits for disability-related function. Read the NDIS therapy guidance and check your plan.

Ask which support item and budget apply, whether online delivery is appropriate and what you agree to pay. Use the current pricing and claiming documents with your provider or plan manager.

Understand the costs

  • Request the session rate and length.
  • Discuss any proposed report writing or other indirect work before it happens.
  • Confirm cancellation terms and what happens if the connection fails.

Telehealth may reduce travel, but it is not automatically free or cheaper overall. The calculator is a planning estimate, not a decision about claim eligibility.

Medicare is a different pathway

Medicare telehealth depends on the service, practitioner, item and eligibility requirements. Having NDIS funding does not establish Medicare eligibility. Check Services Australia’s telehealth information and ask your practitioner about the arrangement for your appointment.

Get ready to connect

Use our online appointment checklist. Ask about the joining link, technology, communication adjustments, privacy and including someone you trust. Confirm a backup contact method.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NDIS fund every telehealth appointment?

No. Online delivery does not make a support eligible. Check the support, your plan, current claiming requirements and agreement before starting.

Can the appointment be claimed on Medicare?

Only when the relevant Medicare requirements are met. Ask your practitioner which funding pathway and charges apply; do not assume NDIS approval means Medicare coverage.

Is telehealth suitable for every participant?

No. Discuss your goals, access needs and the work involved. Ask about an in-person option if online delivery is unsuitable.

Ask about your options

Explore Unify telehealth or start a referral. Confirm the service, appointment format, regional availability and access arrangements with the team. This is not urgent medical care; call 000 in an emergency. Guidance checked 3 October 2026.
