Respite care: planning a break with the right support

A planned break can help you and the people who usually support you sustain your everyday arrangements.

How does NDIS short-term accommodation work?

STA provides disability-related support while your primary informal supports take a break. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and plan; wanting a holiday or new experiences does not establish eligibility.

What costs should you check?

Ask for a written breakdown of support hours, accommodation and personal costs. Food, meals and entertainment tickets are not funded STA inclusions. Only pay for supports actually used.

Plan the practical details

  • Discuss communication, access, routines and overnight support needs.
  • Confirm the setting, staff arrangements, dates and cancellation terms.
  • Check your current plan, available funds and agreed charges before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Does respite always mean staying elsewhere?

No. Depending on your needs and funding, support may be arranged at home or in another suitable setting.

Can STA replace crisis accommodation?

No. STA is not a housing-crisis response. Contact your NDIS contact about changed disability support needs and local housing services if you need somewhere to live. If there is immediate danger, call 000.

Does Unify offer emergency respite?

Contact our team during office hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, to discuss availability. A website referral does not arrange immediate care or confirm an emergency placement.
