Individualised living options (ILO) help you design support around where and how you want to live. They fund disability supports, not a house. Discuss your goals, needs and funding with your NDIS contact before agreeing an arrangement.
Could ILO suit you?
The NDIA describes ILO as an option for adults, or people aged 17 planning their future home, who need at least six hours of formal or informal support at home each day. You also need to be ready to explore options and develop the arrangement. These indicators do not guarantee funding.
Two stages, with a funding decision
- Explore and design: decide what you want, consider your support network and risks, and prepare a service proposal with your provider.
- Put supports in place: once the proposal is approved, organise the agreed arrangements and monitoring. Stage 1 funding does not itself approve Stage 2.

How the arrangement works
Primary support may involve an unrelated host or housemate. Supplementary support provides extra help alongside it. Regular monitoring checks how things are working and how to resolve concerns or adjust supports. Ask who is responsible for each part.
Separate support from everyday costs
ILO does not pay rent, mortgage repayments, food or power bills. Home modifications and support for activities outside the home are not ILO inclusions. Check other approved supports separately.
Questions before you agree
- Who provides everyday support, and what happens when they are unavailable?
- What are the agreed payments, responsibilities and separate housing costs?
- How will you raise concerns, review the arrangement or make changes?
Payment arrangements differ between packages and should be agreed and recorded in the proposal. The NDIA recommends independent financial advice because payments received through an ILO may have tax implications.
Your questions, answered
Does ILO funding secure a home?
No. Housing availability and costs are separate from approved disability support funding.
Can an enquiry confirm ILO approval or availability?
No. The NDIA decides funding. Ask providers to confirm their capacity and suitability before making commitments.
