The right support starts with your routines, preferences and the help you need at home. SIL is one option; it is not the name for every kind of in-home support.
When might SIL be suitable?
Supported independent living is for higher support needs, with help or supervision available around the clock, including overnight. A few hours of assistance each day is not automatically SIL. The NDIA considers your needs and other home and living options.
Support and housing are different
SIL funds support workers, not the house, rent, groceries or bills. SDA is a separate type of specialist housing for eligible participants. Having SIL funding does not establish SDA eligibility or confirm a vacancy.

Questions to ask a provider
- What help will be available during the day and overnight?
- Which supports are shared, and which are individual?
- What are the support charges and separate housing costs?
- How can I communicate preferences, raise concerns or change arrangements?
