SIL and SDA: the support and the home

Supported independent living (SIL) and specialist disability accommodation (SDA) have different roles. Some participants need both; others need different home and living supports.

SIL: help with daily life

SIL funds support workers to help or supervise daily tasks, including personal care and meals. It is designed for people who need support throughout the day and overnight. Read the current NDIS SIL guidance.

SIL is support funding, not a house or tenancy. The amount and arrangement depend on your disability support needs. Other options may suit you better.

SDA: specialist housing

SDA is housing for eligible participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. It does not pay for support workers. Read the current NDIS SDA guidance.

An SDA home must meet the relevant requirements and be enrolled by the NDIA. Your needs, funding and the home’s features need to fit together.

What you pay for separately

  • Daily support: covered by the support funding approved for you.
  • Specialist housing: SDA funding, if approved for you.
  • Rent and everyday costs: your responsibility, including an agreed reasonable rent contribution in SDA.

Ask for clear agreements showing the provider, services and charges. Do not assume an advertised home includes support workers or that a support quote includes rent.

Planning around your needs

  • Describe the help you need during the day and overnight.
  • Think about access, location, routines and who you want to live with.
  • Discuss options and evidence with your NDIS contact and support coordinator, if you have one.
  • Confirm approved funding, providers, charges and agreements before making arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is SDA the same as SIL?

No. SDA relates to specialist housing; SIL relates to support workers helping with daily life.

Can I have SDA without SIL?

Yes. SDA and daily supports have different purposes. The combination depends on your assessed needs and approved funding.

Does SIL pay my rent or groceries?

No. SIL does not pay rent or ordinary everyday expenses such as groceries. Ask your provider to separate these costs from support charges.

Does needing some help at home mean I qualify for SIL?

Not automatically. SIL is for higher support needs, including overnight help or supervision. Discuss all suitable home and living options with the NDIA.

Talk through your supports

Explore SIL supports or support coordination. Ask Unify about available support arrangements in your region. No housing vacancy or funding approval is promised here. Guidance checked 3 October 2026.
