Speech pathology may be part of a participant’s disability supports. Before booking, check how the proposed service relates to your everyday needs, approved plan and funding arrangements.

What can NDIS therapy support?

NDIS therapy can help build or maintain skills for everyday activities, including communication. Speech pathology is one of the therapies the NDIA may fund, when the support meets its funding criteria. Read the current NDIA therapy guidance.

A diagnosis, recommendation or provider quote does not itself approve funding. Check the purpose of each support and your approved plan before agreeing to costs.

Start with your communication goals

Explain what you want to do more easily, such as expressing choices, understanding information or communicating at work or in the community. Ask about assessment and your preferred communication methods, including AAC where relevant. SPA explains person-centred communication support.

Agree the service and costs

  • Confirm the practitioner’s qualifications and experience with your needs.
  • Ask what assessment, appointments and reports are proposed.
  • Request an itemised quote, including any proposed indirect activity or travel.
  • Check the agreed fees, payment arrangements and cancellation conditions.
  • Agree how you can review, change or stop support.

Discuss consent, assessment and reporting costs before proceeding. SPA’s assessment guidance describes these conversations.

Check the plan and claiming conditions

The NDIA describes therapy funding as stated support for a specific service. Check your plan wording and current rules rather than assuming budgets can be swapped. Review the NDIA guidance or ask your plan contact if anything is unclear.

Our price calculator can help estimate selected supports. An estimate is not funding approval or confirmation that a charge is claimable. Agree individual costs and conditions with the provider.

Swallowing and health care

Swallowing concerns need an appropriate assessment. Seek medical advice about difficulty swallowing and confirm who is responsible for any proposed treatment or disability-related support. Do not follow generic exercise or food-texture advice without assessment. Healthdirect explains dysphagia.

Your questions, answered

Does my diagnosis automatically fund speech therapy?

No. Check NDIS access separately from the funding and purpose of a proposed support. Your plan and the applicable funding criteria matter.

Are reports, travel and indirect activities always claimable?

No. Ask for an itemised quote and check the relevant support-item conditions, funding and agreement before accepting a charge.

Can sessions take place at home or by telehealth?

Check suitability, provider availability, fees and your funding arrangements. A delivery option should be agreed for your needs rather than assumed.

Discuss support with Unify

Ask our team about practitioner suitability, delivery options, fees and current availability. View the dated wait-time snapshot and confirm appointments with intake. Guidance checked 4 October 2026.
