Counselling can serve different purposes. Before booking with NDIS funding, check what the support is for, whether it meets funding requirements and how it fits your plan.
Start with the purpose of the support
The word counselling does not, by itself, establish funding eligibility. A support may focus on everyday disability-related skills, or it may be clinical treatment for a mental health condition. These are different responsibilities.
Questions to ask before booking
- What specific disability-related need will this support address?
- What qualifications and relevant experience does the professional have?
- Which support is stated in my plan, and can this service be paid from it?
- What are the appointment, report-writing and other agreed costs?
- How will we review whether the support is helping with my everyday goals?

Choose support that fits you
Discuss communication needs, access adjustments and your preferences before starting. You can ask for information in a format you understand and involve a chosen support person. Ask the professional to explain their approach and the options available.
The number and frequency of appointments should be discussed individually. Neither a set number of sessions nor an unused budget guarantees that a particular service can be funded.
Frequently asked questions
Is all counselling covered by the NDIS?
No. Check the purpose, funding criteria, evidence, practitioner requirements and the support stated in your plan. Confirm the arrangements before agreeing to charges.
Can NDIS funding pay for treatment of depression or anxiety?
Clinical treatment for a mental health condition is generally the responsibility of the health system. Speak with your GP or treating team about treatment and payment pathways.
Does Unify provide the therapy I am looking for?
Ask our team about the available service, practitioner qualifications, access needs and costs. This guide does not confirm availability of a particular clinical program.
Plan your next conversation
Bring your goals and relevant plan details to the discussion. Explore our psychology service and planning calculator, then confirm your actual support and quote.
Clinical treatment and NDIS funding
The NDIS does not replace clinical mental health treatment. Eligible disability-related therapy supports must meet funding criteria and be appropriate for the person’s plan. Ask your GP about clinical treatment pathways, and confirm any NDIS support before booking.
