The Disability Support Pension (DSP) is an income-support payment administered by Services Australia. This guide helps you find the rules, current payment information and official claiming steps.
DSP and the NDIS have different roles
DSP helps eligible people with living costs. NDIS funding pays for eligible disability supports. The two schemes have separate decisions and requirements: receiving one does not automatically qualify you for the other.
Who can get DSP?
You must meet both medical and non-medical rules. Non-medical rules cover matters such as age, residence, income and assets. Read Services Australia’s eligibility information for your circumstances.
Medical assessment follows either the manifest or general medical rules. A diagnosis alone does not establish entitlement. Even when manifest medical rules apply, the non-medical requirements still matter.
Read the medical rules. Ask Services Australia what evidence is required rather than using a condition list or an online checklist as an approval prediction.

How much can you receive?
The amount depends on your circumstances, including age, living arrangements and income or assets. Check the current DSP payment rates for the category that applies to you. Rates and thresholds change, so an old dollar figure may give the wrong estimate.
Preparing a claim
- Read the official requirements and gather the identity, financial and medical information requested.
- Ask your treating professionals for relevant evidence about your condition and its impact.
- Keep copies of documents and messages, and check requests for further information.
Follow Services Australia’s claiming steps. Services Australia decides the claim; a provider cannot guarantee approval or a particular payment.
Frequently asked questions
Does a diagnosis automatically qualify me?
No. Medical and non-medical requirements apply. Ask Services Australia about the evidence and rules relevant to you.
Can I receive DSP and NDIS supports?
You may be eligible for both. Each has its own process and requirements, so a decision about one does not determine the other.
Where can I get help with a claim?
Services Australia explains help from its staff, an advocate or a nominee. Seek advice about your circumstances and any decision you want reviewed.
