Physical therapist or physiotherapist: choosing support in Australia

The name alone does not tell you which treatment you need. In Australia, physiotherapist and physical therapist are both protected titles within the physiotherapy profession.

Check the practitioner, not just the title

Ahpra’s protected-title guidance lists both titles under physiotherapy. This does not establish two separate Australian professions with different treatments or qualification levels.

Use the Ahpra register to check a practitioner’s registration and any conditions. Ask about their experience with your needs, communication preferences and goals.

What physiotherapy can involve

Physiotherapists assess movement and physical function. Depending on your situation, support may include exercises, education, hands-on treatment or advice about movement aids. Read Healthdirect’s physiotherapy overview.

An assessment should guide the approach. Ask why a technique is recommended, what the evidence says and what alternatives are available. Results vary; a device or treatment name is not a promise of recovery.

Connect therapy to everyday goals

  • Explain what is difficult at home, work or in the community.
  • Choose goals that matter to you, such as moving safely around your home.
  • Ask how progress will be reviewed and what you can practise between visits.
  • Discuss any access, transport or communication adjustments.

Can NDIS funding pay for physiotherapy?

Eligible therapy supports must meet the NDIS funding criteria and have evidence of benefits for disability-related function. They may build or maintain everyday skills and independence. Check the current NDIS therapy guidance and your plan before booking.

A provider’s recommendation alone does not guarantee funding. Ask which support, budget and charges apply, including any agreed report writing or other indirect work.

Frequently asked questions

Are physical therapy and physiotherapy separate professions in Australia?

Both titles are protected within the physiotherapy profession. Check registration and relevant experience rather than assuming the title identifies a different treatment.

Will the same treatment suit everyone?

No. Your assessment, goals, preferences and circumstances should guide the plan. Ask about expected benefits, limitations and how progress will be reviewed.

What should I ask about costs?

Request the appointment rate, session length and any additional agreed charges. Confirm your funding arrangements and cancellation conditions before starting.
